Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir (10-3) will take on former PRIDE FC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (30-4-1) in the next fight for both fighters, according to a TAGG Radio report.
No date was mentioned for the clash.
However, the New Year’s Eve weekend card on December 29 seems likely, considering “Minotauro” is widely believed to be in-line for a title shot against current division champ, Randy Couture, in early 2008.
Couture is set to leave for South Africa to film a lead role in, “The Scorpion King: The Akkadian,” next month. “The Natural” is also recovering from a broken left forearm following his third round technical knockout of Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 74: “Respect.”
Nogueira is a mixed martial arts veteran who was victorious in his Octagon debut at UFC 73: “Stacked” on July 7, outpointing Heath Herring on all three judges scorecards. The Brazilian possesses perhaps the most dangerous mix of striking, grappling and experience in the weight class.
He also has a chin made of reinforced steel rebar.
Mir is also coming off of a win, submitting Antoni Hardonk via first round kimura. It was his second win in his last four fights since returning from a major motorcycle accident that nearly killed him and ended his fighting career.
If this bout comes to fruition it will no doubt be an enormous test for Mir — “Big Nog” would be the toughest opponent he has ever faced.
