MATT SERRA has launched a scathing attack on welterweight legend Matt Hughes in the grappling duo’s latest war of words.
Current champion Serra says Hughes is a bully and the biggest jerk in the UFC who has no class when he wins.
He said: “If anyone doesn’t understand why I can’t stand Matt Hughes I suggest they put on the DVD of The Ultimate Fighter 2 and see for themselves what a bully and arrogant jerk this guy is.
“I challenge anyone to witness what he is like and then tell me he’s not a total a****** and jerk.
“He is a real idiot – I think he’s a bully. A lot of people agree with me but won’t actually come out with it. I don’t mind being the one guy who tells him to his face that he’s the biggest jerk in the UFC.”
Serra and Hughes can both be seen coaching teams of mixed martial arts hopefuls in the new series of TUF Team Serra v Team Hughes reality show on Bravo from Monday.
Once the series ends, the two will face each other in a championship clash on December 29 in Las Vegas.
UFC legend Hughes has claimed Serra was lucky to beat Georges St-Pierre to win the welterweight title at UFC 69 and sees their end-of-year bout as an easy way to reclaim the championship.
But Serra hit back, saying: “Hughes isn’t classy when he wins.
"BJ Penn was destroying him in their second fight and he couldn’t give BJ any credit and instead tried to pretend he wasn’t getting his butt kicked for two rounds before Penn got injured.”
Serra acknowledged Hughes’ huge standing in the mixed martial arts world but added: “He’s a UFC legend and I give him his due.
"He’s a two-time UFC champion and has beaten everyone but his jujitsu isn’t there and despite all of his attempts over the last few years, his boxing and kickboxing are not world class.
“He doesn’t like to trade punches. He doesn’t like to trade one to get one in. He’ll have a hard time with me because I will trade all night.”
On Hughes’ claims that Serra isn’t one of the top ten fighters in the UFC, the champion said: “Hughes gives me no respect whatsoever.
"The fact is, I’ve beaten some of the top names over a long period in this sport and on The Ultimate Fighter 4 I beat everyone put in front of me to earn that title shot against Georges St-Pierre.
“I beat Georges, who had played with Matt Hughes, in one round. He can say what he likes, but I earned this title and will prove that to him in December.
“At least if you lose to someone like Georges St-Pierre you lose to a gentleman – you lose to Hughes and you are losing to the worst winner ever!
Serra continued: “Hughes is the kind of guy who’d never let you live down a loss and would really take pride in pouring salt in the wound.
“There’s no way I’m letting him gloat about beating me for the next 50 years. I won’t let that happen.
“Of course I want to keep my belt but more than that, I want to beat Matt Hughes up!”
